Book Review: Pillow Thoughts by Courtney Peppernell #AWW2019

Pillow thoughts is a collection of poetry by Courtney Peppernell. Poetry is a difficult genre to review in my opinion as it can be quite personal. I read this book earlier in the year and savoured the poems in it. The book is divided into the following sections – If you are dreaming of someone, If you are in love, If you are heartbroken, If you are lonely, If you are sad, If you are missing someone, If you need encouragement, If you are soul-searching, If you need a reason to stay, and These are for you. That should give you a good indication of the type of poems in this collection. At the time of reading, I remember being affected by her poems on heartbreak, loneliness, sadness – you get the drift. But what I liked is it’s a book you can pick up and read a poem or two when you are feeling whatever you are feeling. I will share some that spoke to me at the time:

in the end

we

as in you and me

were never

meant to be

(pg 57)

You’ve become so damaged

That when someone

Wants to give you

What you deserve

You have no idea

How to respond

(pg 190)

There is a great deal of difficulty

in surviving

And it starts with choosing to feel

the good

and especially the bad

(pg 231)

In the last few years I’ve been enjoying poetry a lot more and sometimes, depending on what I’m going through, they speak to me at a deeper level. That’s the beauty of words. The beauty of poetry.

Thats the best thing I like about reading poetry (though I dont read that much) is that one can just go through a poem at a time, savour it and then read some more Or maybe just go back and read it again. I like the way this book is built up with the sections- very interesting concept for a poetry book 🙂
