Poetry

First Day

Beginnings are exciting:
new bag, new lockers,
new adventures await

My best friend, however,
has summer-dyed hair, ignores me,
hangs with the cool kids I hate

High school is a journey I’m unsure I can tolerate

My daughter is starting high school this year so this tugged at my heartstrings! I really liked the rhythm and rhyme, it has an easy sound and pace that contrasts with the heavy feelings the MC feels.

Reminded me of the scene from Wonder. 🙂 Friendships take a different turn in high school, we all have to go through that bitterness. Lovely short and crisp poetry, Sanch.

That feeling of whether your carefully constructed networks are all going to crumble… Evocative.

Nice one, Sanch. I still wince a bit at how our language how moved to shorthand “hanging out” or “hanging around” to just “hang”. As I lost family member to suicide by hanging, the shorthand expression is, at times, a grief trigger for me. I don’t grieve about it anymore, I just feel uncomfortable when I hear it. It’s my problem, not the speaker’s.
Great poem though. You really put us there.
