Erosion

He told her he loved her
but then put her down;
often called her an idiot
or the joke of the town

He said she was the prettiest
but then called her a slut;
ridiculed her choice of clothes
and the size of her butt

He told her she was sweet
but made fun when she cried;
told her she was hysterical
and emotional all the time

He said her quirks were cute
but then said she’s fucked in the head;
called her a ‘psycho bitch’
and wished she was dead

Over time she believed him
lost faith in herself;
didn’t think anyone could love her
or she was worthy of anyone else

It took years to realise
what an abusive monster he was;
the two friends who stuck by her
made it clear it wasn’t her fault

With their love and support
she finally found her feet
built herself up slowly
through a year of therapy

She now believes in herself
and looks out for red flags
but emotional scars still remain
with her trusting soul cracked

    This is a form of toxic love. The last lines are empowering. I liked the flow of words in the verse.

    It always takes years to realise what a monster some women live with. But, thank god that they do realise and leave to find peace within.
    Loved this, too, Sanch!
