Promises

‘I’ll love you forever,’ she says, gazing into my eyes.

‘I’ll always be yours,’ I reply, playing with her diamond ring.

We extricate our entwined bodies. I button my shirt; she straightens the sheets.

Her husband will be home soon.

We know promises are hollow.
