Rebel

You tell me to be nice
even if someone is rude
You tell me to be docile
no matter what my mood
You tell me to be coy
because that’s what they’ll like
You tell me to stay quiet
and never argue my point
You tell me to sacrifice
my needs for those around
You tell me to submit
to others wishes, even absurd
You tell me I’m a good girl
if I comply all the time
You tell me I’m pretty
but never clever or bright

You train me to believe
this is all I can be –
born to do your bidding
cook for you and breed
But my mind is my own,
it rebels and decides
to fight the patriarchy,
take the world in my stride
I will be nice and kind
but only if you are too
I will speak my mind
and share my point of view
I strive to be equal,
be given every chance
to do all I want to do,
live the best life I can
