Life lessons

On never giving up

Life isn’t easy. It isn’t even fair most of the time. Yet, most of us continue day after day. We wake up, we put one foot in front of the other, we go to work or school, we socialise, we do our chores. We get on. Most of the mundane things can be done on autopilot. But what happens when things get tough? What happens when the universe throws a spanner in the works?

For some of us, tough times are hard to manage and we can crumble. We can avoid. We can give up. Failed a test? Don’t bother trying. Lost a job? May as well go on the dole. Been hurt in a relationship again? Don’t put yourself out there anymore. Setting up a business too risky? Don’t bother. And while the avoidance of the fear and discomfort may work for a while, chances are, in the long run the individual will still be unhappy. Still be fearful.

On the other hand, there are a few individuals who persevere. They are the ones who, in spite of all the rocks thrown at them will still plough through. Failed a test? Will keep trying hard until I pass one. Lost a job? Work my arse off to find another. Been hurt in a relationship again? Take time to heal and get back out there. Setting up a business too risky? Take that risk and see what happens.

Do the latter group not feel anxious, not experience hurt or not feel sad? Of course not! They are human too. The difference is, they will feel all these emotions, feel the discomfort and do things anyway! What they have, is grit. What they are, is courageous. What they will experience, will be life-changing.

Most people have a problem experiencing discomfort. Society seems to teach us we need to feel good at all times. All you need to do is watch ads for ten minutes and you’ll know that you deserve the best and you don’t deserve to work for it. Sadly, reality is quite different. You need to work for what you want. And sometimes, the work may not be comfortable. It may be scary. It may be nerve-wracking. But as long as you persist, as long as you ride the discomfort and give it your all, you will get there in the end. Or at least, you will learn something from it.

Life isn’t about succeeding at everything. It’s about trying, not giving up, and learning from things. It’s about growing from the most difficult of circumstances.

That’s what makes it so worth while.

Do you tend to give up easily? Or can you handle discomfort and keep trying?

Do share!

Your post reminds me of a song that has always spoken to me. I don’t remember the name but I can never forget a part of its lyrics. I don’t know why but I wish to share it with all the readers, here:

“When the rainy days are dying,
Gotta keep on, keep on trying
All the bees and birds are flying
Never let go gotta hold on and
Non stop ’til the break of dawn and
Keep on moving, don’t stop rocking

Get on up When you’re down, baby,
    Take a good look around.
I know it’s not much, But it’s okay.
We’ll Keep on movin’ on anyway”

    Great post, Sanch!

Ooh nice lyrics. Going to have to find out which song that is. There’s another one I love currently and it’s by The Living End called Keep on running 🙂

I love this! I never give up. There’s been many times I’ve wanted to, especially at work. I indulge in the fantasy of running away, but I never do. I just keep going. – “Life isn’t about succeeding at everything. It’s about trying, not giving up, and learning from things. It’s about growing from the most difficult of circumstances.” -So much wisdom there! I wish everyone could read it and believe it!

Thanks Paula, I don’t give up either. Like you, I dream of running away but yeah it’s a fantasy! If anything, the running away is to chase different goals, not to avoid 🙂

I agree. If we give up, we may feel okay but that will last just a little while. The real happiness comes from striving hard and trying before giving up. I don’t give up easily. If I do, I need to be convinced that I will not regret later.

Giving up on your dreams is like giving up on your life…..It is just not worth it…..Every discomfort, every pain that one endures when one strives makes that person stronger. But it is not everyone’s cup of tea. I just finished reading Malala’s memoir. When I had started the book, I thought I knew what all happened….but it was when I read what she went through everyday, and how she consciously made decisions that would threaten her, I realized that greatness comes with a big price.

Yes, even those who seem so strong and infallible suffer from anxiety. Taking risk is always nerve-racking but that’s how we can reach the heights we are meant to. Hold fast to your dream 🙂

It is so easy to give up, isn’t it? We are almost tempted into it every now and then when the going gets tough. The toughest amongst are prone to that, but there’s wisdom in holding on and going about giving it our best shot. As you rightly said, life is about not succeeding always but about trying. That bit about trying is what we need to go on.
