An illusion

I scroll through her Facebook photos
Feelings of envy seep through me
Her picture perfect boyfriend
And their recent holidays in Hawaii

She shows off her six-pack abs
In her latest yoga poses
She gushes about her “awesome bf
Sharing pictures of earrings and roses

I see the picture of their new house
It’s right next to the beach
She posts photos of sunrises
With the hashtag ‘blessed‘ on each

She updates her status to ‘engaged’
With a photo of her platinum diamond ring
It’s followed by the caption
3 carat Tiffany is the only thing

I get sick of updates on wedding dresses
Her photos of her perfect life
I make myself stop following her posts
While she goes on to become his wife

A year or so later on the news
I learn yet another woman has died
At the hands of an abusive husband
Who has killed her and her unborn child

I see the photo aired on the telly
It’s from her recent Facebook post
Perfectly poised in an expensive dress

Fantastic poem, Sanch. But very painful. Love knows nothing.

There’s so much that Facebook doesn’t show, and it’s like looking in from the outside. You never know what happens behind those closed doors or facades that social media can have.

Exactly! I know I get bogged down by comparison but honestly, how much do we really know?

Very well written. The online image is often quite different from reality.

Very compelling, Sanch! I love the way you play with words to bring out the truth from the facade!

Sadly, it’s the truth many times. FB is farce.
