Kitty Kapers

On cats, cat yoga and cat ladies

A couple of Thursdays ago, I had one of my most exciting days in a long time. With my new job keeping me so busy at the moment, I feel like I have no time to blog or write, let alone have a life! I’m exhausted most of the time. Anyway, I digress. About a month or so ago, fellow cat-lady, writer, blogger, and child-free enthusiast Ashleigh and I finally decided to meet. And what better way than to meet at Catmosphere Cafe among cats.

D-day arrived on Thursday and I headed to Surry hills straight after work dressed in my workout gear. I met with Ashleigh {who is like my long-lost twin in so many ways!}, we had a drink {of LLB} and then headed to the cafe. While we waited, we ogled at the kittens in the kitten room. Oh my goodness, I wanted to take then all home but I had a feeling a certain Pebbles and Buttons wouldn’t be too happy with their mum!

Just chillin

Just chillin’

Finally, it was time for Cat Yoga. Unlike popular misconception, cat yoga is not about watching cats do yoga — though I bet they’d be awesome at it only if they could follow instructions. Rather, it’s about us humans doing yoga in a room full of adult cats. Like you, I can totally see what’s wrong in that sentence. How in the world can you practise yoga with cats around?

Thankfully, none of the kitties were like my Buttons who does love to nuzzle you while you work out. It’d been a while since I’d done yoga properly in a class but with cats around, I figured ‘properly’ didn’t really count. You did what you could and tried to pet the cats while doing so. See, flexibility does come in handy!

When we first entered the room, the humans and cats were all just a wee bit excitable. It’s not often you get to spend time with so many cats. When it was time to start yoga, some cats decided they owned the place and chose to sit on mats. I had a black one on mine. If you are a cat owner, you know the rules — always do what the cat wants. Which means, if a cat is on your yoga mat, you need to work around him.

My yoga companion {not Ashleigh!}

After an hour of cat sun salutations, downward cat dog, and tree poses, it was time to pet the cats. Again. By now, they had pretty much settled  down and were happy for a pat. Some had fallen asleep, others just chose to explore people’s bags and sniff our cats on them. One of them found his royal throne right on Ashleigh’s bag. Once again, we couldn’t disturb him. Because you know, we abide by cats’ rules.

Finally, after playing and petting and wanting to take them home, we eventually had to say goodbye to the cats. It was, after all, a school night.

Reminds me of Pebbles

Reminds me of Pebbles

I really want to go back to Catmosphere. To play with both cats and kittens. And to go to cat yoga again. It was so much fun! In fact, I’ve started wondering about a potential blogger meet-up at Catmosphere because there’s certainly a few Sydney cat lady bloggers. 🙂

If you’re ever in Sydney and love cats, go to cat yoga! Or you know, just to pet the cats!

Ever been to Catmosphere?

What do you think about cat yoga?

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

How… strange… but novel. My cat would drive everyone nuts by pushing her head into everyone for a pat. What will they think of next??

Haha…yeah that’s like my Buttons. Can’t do yoga with him around. But these cats were pretty good apart from wanting to sit on the mat

I must admit to being a big confused. I can’t imagine doing yoga with cats all around, but there are certainly heaps of them on the internet doing yoga in ways I’ll never be able to do it.

OMFG I totally want to go to that. Am a child-free, cat-loving lady and Potato loves when I am down on the ground doing something he can join. He is especially when I am sewing – as soon as there is fabric on the floor he’s all over it. The happiness only increases once there’s a tissue paper pattern there as well. This sounds like a fun night!

From your Instagram post, I truly thought it was about making your cat do Yoga – I even tried making Fudge do some Surya Namaskars (lets not talk about what happened after) 😀 But doing Yoga around cats sounds so much more fun 😀
