Book Review: The Guest Cat

The Guest Cat is a novella by Takashi Hiraide. Set in suburban Tokyo, the story is about a couple who are freelance writers living in a rented cottage. One day, a cat invites itself into their little cottage. Chibi — ‘Little one’ — belongs to a boy a few doors down. The narrator, is not a cat-person himself but his wife loves all animals. However, with each of Chibi’s visits, he starts to fall in love with her. Soon, he and his wife expectantly await Chibi’s visits — they have food ready for her and a place to sleep. Before Chibi, their conversation was limited but with her arrival, they find they have a lot more to talk about and much more to look forward to. But then, something happens that will change everything again.

This is a beautifully written book even though it has been translated into English. There is a lyrical and poetic quality to the narrative. While simple on the surface, the deeper messages of connection and disconnection are explored. The importance of pets and animals to our general wellbeing is another area touched upon. And finally, the novella looks at the small and simple things in life that bring pleasure and the importance of focussing on that. You do not have to be a cat-lover to enjoy this book but I suppose, it adds more pleasure given you can identify the nuances of cat behaviour.

It’s a beautifully written book with a moving storyline. It’s hard not to fall in love with it.

Sound like a lovely book. Animals have that way of creeping into your heart and you never really know how much they mean to you until they are gone.

Seems like the perfect book for you to read! πŸ˜€
It sounds interesting, but I agree. It will be more fun to read if you have lived with a cat and can identify with their behavior.

I think I’ll enjoy this book, not because of cats but because I like lyricae and poetic narratives as such. Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚
