Life

One chapter ends

It could be any ordinary workspace. One that is part of an open-plan office. A desktop computer from the early 2000s sits in the middle of this corner workstation. Post-it notes with important numbers brighten the drab grey monitor. Little knick-knacks and decorative figurines of cats, dolphins and seashells adorn the rest of the computer. The wall behind the computer screams with personality. It’s filled with inspirational quotes, postcards from favourite places, thank you cards and most importantly, drawings from young children and adolescents.

Then there’s the boring stuff. Papers strewn on one side — some to be shredded, others to be filed. Books about mental health and diagnoses, therapeutic approaches and treatments for anxiety, anorexia, depression or OCD. They are as common as ABC in this environment. There are snacks in the drawers for those marathon report days and cans of tuna for when lunch has not been prepared.

Five years and four months. That’s how long this workspace has been made into a comfortable place.

Five years and four months later, this workspace is now bare. The walls have the remains of blu-tac. The desk is bereft of personal belongings. The shelves are devoid of books. There is no more food in the drawer.

It’s time to close this chapter. It’s time to say goodbye.

It comes with a heavy heart. It comes with tears for leaving behind colleagues who’ve become friends, clients who’ve been held very dear and work that has been rewarding. It comes with the fear of leaving something familiar, of known routines and of being within a comfort zone.

Yet, it’s time to move on. It’s time to embark on a new adventure.

Five years and four months later, it’s time to spread my wings and face new challenges. It’s time to start a new chapter.

Taking the step to change your environment after 5+ years takes guts. It’s like taking up a new stream in studies. Good luck!

Can’t wait to read about the new adventures 🙂

I’m hoping I find the push needed to change my environment too. 🙂 The way you describe it, it’s kind of like mine, without the cans of tuna.

Happy trails to you on your new adventure, and have fun! 😀

Thanks Vinay…sometimes it’s easier to stay in a comfortable situation even when it’s not working for you. I find that as scary as it is, I have to make changes to continue to grow.

Sanch, it is not easy to move against the inertia, that of over 5 years. Now this is the beginning of an incredible change, a new chapter added to your book. Good Luck, and here’s to hoping to read about your adventures really soon 🙂

Very exciting and fulfilling. It is not easy to close a part of our life and start over again but then you cannot grow new crops before tilling the soil. Here’s to new adventures and growth! 🙂
