On my guest list

I’m not the best at hosting dinner parties. I prefer laid-back, casual entertaining where my guests treat my place as home. But ever so often, I’ve fantasised of hosting a dinner party for certain people. You know, the type of people you fantasise having a conversation with? The ones you watch on TV or read about and yearn to pick their brains? Yeah, them. I’m sure I could hold the most fantastic dinner party because it’d be all about the company and conversation. The food and my shabby hostliness {yeah, totally made that word up} would fly under the radar thanks to this stellar company. So who would be the 5 people on my guest list?

dinnerguests

J. K. Rowling: Do I really need to explain why I want Rowling as my dinner guest? To have a conversation with the mind that created the world of Hogwarts, Ministry of Magic and the sport of Quidditch would be the biggest honour ever! Just how does one even do that? Not only am I in awe of her Harry Potter series, I fell in love with The Casual Vacancy. I would love to talk to her about mental health and writing and for just being a bloody smart woman!

Emma Watson: I’ve been reading a lot about Watson and her views on feminism lately and I love this girl. She is so intelligent, so articulate, so insightful, it makes me wish there were more people like her. I love that she played Hermione in the Harry Potter series because she was my favourite character. Turns out she’s exactly like Hermione! She’s also an awesome actress…while I wasn’t a fan of the Harry Potter movies {because they weren’t as good as the books}, I loved her in Perks of being a Wallflower. Having her over for dinner would mean interesting conversation about feminism and women’s rights.

Tara Moss: Another feminist. Another author. Another bloody intelligent and articulate woman. I have heard Moss speak in person and I was blown away by her intelligence. Then I read her book, The Fictional Woman and I am so impressed by the research as well as her personal story. What’s even more amazing is her work for children’s and women’s rights, being an ambassador for UNICEF and a patron for the Full Stop foundation for rape and DV services in Australia. What’s not to like about her? I can totally see us hitting it off {well, me probably sitting in awe} talking about DV, victim blaming, rape, and just how patriarchy is a curse for us all.

Brene Brown: I first heard about Brene Brown through my mate A. I watched her Youtube video and had the biggest epiphany ever. Brown is a social worker and researcher in the area of shame and vulnerability. Her books Gifts of Imperfection and Daring Greatly are amazing. I also bought her most recent book, Rising Strong which I am yet to read. Brown basically says we need to be okay with imperfection and showing our vulnerabilities and being compassionate towards ourselves for these, is what helps us connect more with people. I can’t wait to read her latest book. As someone who is a recovering perfectionist and a bloody high achiever, it’s hard work being okay with my imperfections. But I have been trying and would love to chat more with her about this and pick her brain.

Adam Gilchrist: Ah Gilly. The only male I’d be inviting. Hopefully he wouldn’t feel too left out. My tryst with Gilly started way before I knew any of the above women so I couldn’t not have him on my guest list. I have been stalking following him since I was about 13 years old. I was his biggest fan and loved how he played cricket so selflessly and was such a gentleman. He was as authentic as you could get on the cricket field and apart from his batting and keeping, it’s what I loved about him. I was fortunate enough to meet him but to have him over for dinner would be even more special.

It’d be an interesting dinner party for sure. I wonder if I’d just be way too awestruck to make any sensible and intelligent conversation. Apart from telling everyone I’m their biggest fan, I doubt I would get too far. I’m sure a glass of red wine could help all that!

Who would be on your dinner party guest list?

Do share!

This was such an awesome prompt. At first I was a bit daunted by it but once I started it was really fun. I would love to meet JK Rowling, Emma Watson and Adam Gilchrist too.

I think I would be the same Sanch – I suspect I’d be too overawed by my guests to actually speak to them!

Wow Gilly. I take it you’re a cricket fan? Impressed.

What a great group of lovely, interesting people. I’d be rather awestruck too, I’d probably forget to feed them!

An evening with JK Rowlings would be extraordinary. It would be difficult not to talk “shop” all night, but she is a fascinating woman and it would be interesting to pick her brain on the everyday, mundane things of life, like how does she take her coffee, does she eat pbj sandwiches, what’s her favorite vacation spot? The list is endless.. Great group you have there. I wouldn’t mind pulling up a chair to your table, myself!

This is a tough one! I’d probably choose J K Rowling or one of my other favourite authors; Jesus Christ because GOD & so many questions to ask and who couldn’t do with a bit of unconditional love and forgiveness; Princess Diana coz LEGEND; Hugh Jackman because CUTE … after that my brain has run out of ideas!
