I’m a bad mum. I forgot my second fur-baby’s birthday. Buttons turned 4 on the 7th of October. For some reason, in my head, his birthday was the 7th of November. Whoops!
Although he turned four this month, Buttons joined our family when he was 16 weeks old. In February 2012, I welcomed him home. Pebbles unfortunately, didn’t take a liking to him and hissed her heart out. Buttons was confined to the second bedroom for a week while I tried to sleep with him and make him feel at home. I still remember how he gobbled the food down in one go and couldn’t fall asleep — he would come and nuzzle me, then walk away, then back to nuzzling and walk away. What with him doing that and Pebbles meowing and scratching at the door, I was sleepless for a while!
I almost gave up Buttons in that first week. Not because I didn’t fall in love with him. But because Pebbles didn’t. And I wanted them both to be happy.
I emailed people at work and someone in another department was interested and decided to come over on the weekend to pick him up. That very evening, Pebbles and Buttons got along.
I swear they knew what was happening.
Since then, they have a love-hate relationship. They can tolerate each other and they can fight like crazy. Buttons now tends to be the instigator. Pebbles will be sitting quietly on the couch and my little pudgy here will decide to torment her. But they have their beautiful moments too. Pebbles is oh-so-loving towards him and grooms him no end. He reciprocates. Sometimes. He does prefer grooming humans though and took a fancy to my last housemate Z.
He’s a fatty who is still quite adorable. I love how he snuggles with me at night and loves to spoon. He’s a sook during storms and hides under the bed. When he’s sick, it’s like having a sick child as he will curl up next to my stomach under the covers. The poor bub has had his fair share of cat flu these four years. But he hasn’t lost his love for people.
Honestly, Buttons is the friendliest cat you could ever meet. He will roll over for a tummy rub when he first meets you. While Pebbles runs away from strangers or is at least wary of them, Mr Buttons will roll over for tradies and friends alike. He will rub himself on you and come for smooches. Wish he had better breath though! He’s also the best-purrer ever!
Happy fourth birthday my little fatty Buttons! Mummy is sorry she forgot but will make up for it purrfectly!
I’d be lost without you.
Until next time,
