Book Review: The Husband’s Secret

…by Liane Moriarty.

Cecilia Fitzpatrick is a happily married woman, a mother, running a successful Tupperware business and living the northern suburbs of Sydney. Her life is busy and almost perfect as she manages her house perfectly, her three kids, fundraising at the school and being a social butterfly. Her perfectly planned life hits a speed bump when she finds a letter to her by her husband John-Paul to be opened in the event of his death. Cecilia grapples with the decision while her husband is away on work: should she open it or let it go as her husband advised? But why does he sound so harrowed if it’s only something sappy and sentimental?

As Cecilia struggles with her husband’s secret, two other lives are also in the process of being shattered. There is Rachel Crowley who Cecilia knows through her daughters’ school and Tess O’Leary who moves back from Melbourne after a family crisis herself.

The question is, should some secrets never be revealed?

This is the first book I’m reading by Liane Moriarty and I really like her style. She manages to build suspense really well and the voices for her different characters are extremely clear. She reminds me a bit like Jodi Picoult in her subject matter in that she poses a moral question and then tries to deal with it from different angles. As a reader, you can’t help but wonder what you would do in these situations. And that’s what keeps you hooked. I managed to finish this book pretty quickly in spite of my packed schedule — that itself is an indication of how interesting it was.

My rating:

Where to find the book:

The title itself is so intriguing and interesting! And as the author’s writing is captivating too, well that’s double bonanza for the readers. Have added in the TBR list and hope to read it soon!

Sounds very intriguing. I’ve got a backlog of unread books at the moment, but that never stops me looking out for new ones! What can I say? Other women collect shoes and handbags, I collect books!

I read this book for book club about a year ago and was hooked. And when we came to discuss it, everyone seemed to love it and we talked for a few hours (all while having a wine)

I actually haven’t been reading much lately and that’s a shame. I have come across some book reviews lately and I’m just feeling book inspired! Looks like I need to go to the bookstore soon.
