Blogging Humour

Am I a stalker

blogging

I have a page on this blog for the lovely blogs I follow. Just for fun, I’ve always called it Blogs I stalk. I update it every few months. Anyway, last week, I wondered if sometimes in the blogging world, when you start following someone with great interest, it could be construed as stalking in the real world. Hear me out.

Say you come across a blog you like. You read one post after landing there through another blog. You feel that instant click with the blogger. You leave a comment and therefore, a link back to your own blog. You sift through their old posts and find other material you like. You leave comments on those too. Some posts are a few years old but that’s okay. By then, you know you want to continue to follow this blogger. You add their blog to your Feedly account. Or you follow them on Bloglovin. You ‘like’ their Facebook page. And follow them on Twitter. You realise they have a Pinterest account and follow them there too. Oh, and they have a wonderful Instagram feed with all their personal photos and day to day adventures. Of course, you can’t miss out on that — you follow them.

But it’s all good. It’s in the blogging world.

Imagine if the blog you read was someone you met in real life. The above scenario would pan out something like this.

You see someone at a party and overhear their conversation with someone else. You realise you agree with what they say and go up and introduce yourself to them. You note down their address and phone number and give them yours. You bring up other topics from their past and realise you have a lot more in common with them and definitely want to be friends. You add them on Facebook. You look through all their old photos and ‘like’ them all. You visit them at their place and look through their photo albums — pictures of their food, their kids, their family. You look through their closet to check out their outfit for the day. You look through their scrapbooks and vision boards at home to know all their different dreams and plans and interests.

Yeah, just a bit creepy.

It’s funny though how it’s so completely normal in the blogging world! 🙂

I thought about this as I recently started fangirling Amy from Handbag Mafia. I love her blog and only recently started following her on Instagram and then wondered — Am I a Stalker?!

Are you a stalker fan of any blogger?

Do you think it’s strange how we would view this so differently in the real world versus online?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated!

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

Ha ha Saanch you creeped me out completely. It’s amazing how much personal info we leave on the blog. Never ever would I talk to a stranger or expect advice like I do on my blog. On a serious note we need to rethink this a bit.

It is a bit creepy if you change the context, isn’t it? We wouldn’t dream of doing this to someone we just meet face to face. Yet through blogging, it’s fine. I am guilty of oversharing all that I mentioned anyway…

Amy is great…. and most of us bloggers are stalkers I reckon, in a good way x

I am a fan of your blog … So yes I stalk you regularly (virtually off-course.)..
I guess following bloggers is healthy stalking …

In that case, I stalk many blogs 😛 And may I stalk your blog too? With your permission?

I agree with this concept and that is why I feel we should think over this while blogging. Writing from the heart is all good but then we also need to think about how much we are writing about.

Haha…I love stalkers of the virtual kind Keirthana! 🙂 I must admit I’m an oversharer but that’s how I connect with my readers I suppose.

Haha…I do think bloggers like their virtual stalkers. But if it happened in real life, I think they’d be pretty worried! 😀

Oh yes! All of us do our share of stalking blogs. What would we ever have done without that?!

Haha…I know right? In the blogging world, stalking is our right. We could get arrested for all of it in the real world! 😉

Loved reading your viewpoint! But aww.. don’t call it stalking and take all the fun out of it ;). Let’s just say it’s a radical form of networking ok?

Haha…ah well, it is very radical in that case as we network to the point of knowing what someone is eating and wearing!

I suppose we’re all ‘stalkers’ in some way, eh? But without having favourite blogs to frequent and leave comments, blogging just becomes a sort of diary-like activity at times. Interesting take on that, Sanch. And lots of food for thought.

Thanks Sid. 🙂 I agree that it is way more fun to interact…but sometimes, I do wonder how much we share of our lives. And mind you, I’m a huge over-sharer — on the blog and Instagram in particular!

It is a bit creepy. Just recently I ran across a similar situation in my own life. My daughter likes this guy and she is friends with him on facebook. She didn’t have a twitter or a google +, but he did. So she followed him using my accounts. The next thing you know he is weirded out because her MOM is following HIM but she isn’t and he thinks it is AWKWARD. LORD! All of a sudden I have become a stalker, predator, and I feel weirded out. I hurriedly UNFOLLOWED him everywhere and set up accounts for her everywhere so she can do what she wants. I am still freaked a bit about it. It never occurred to me how he would view it. UGH. He was sorry. She was sorry. I was mortified and I hadn’t done anything. A person really has to be careful. I am used to being a blogger stalker. Just didn’t occur to me that it was different if you weren’t a blogger. MY BAD. You live and learn. 😛

I does seem strange doesn’t it. In normal life it would be very weird, but as bloggers it is like Christmas when we get another ‘stalker’ who follows and likes what we do.

Nothing wrong with being a stalker, oh I mean fan of a blogger. When I read their posts I find that they make me smile and I talk about my “new friends” to hubby (who prob does think I am going a little crazy)
