Back to School

study

I am going back to school on Monday. Yes, I am back to university. To study a Graduate Diploma in Creative Writing. And I’m nervous as hell! The last time I started at a new university, I was 21 years old.

Now I am 30.

9 years older. Questionably wiser. Falling in the mature-aged student category. I don’t know what to expect any more. I know technology has advanced greatly since I finished uni in 2007 at the age of 23. I hear there is a lot more to do online in terms of submitting assignments. I haven’t worked a 9 to 5 job while studying full time simultaneously.

So yes, I am nervous.

Nervous about whether I will cope with a full time load.  {In fact I’m already wondering if I should go part-time even though I’ve taken Monday off to get my student card, scope the place and attend my first class which is the elective I would have to drop if part-time was my decision!}

I’m also nervous about the people I will meet. Nervous about doing well. Nervous about the unknown. I’m kind of hoping that as the classes are all in the evening, the likelihood of having mature-aged students is a lot higher. Which hopefully means there are other individuals with worries similar to my own. It might also mean there are other people juggling possible full-time work while studying. Hopefully.

It’s going to be strange going back to school.

I know it will be exciting and nerve-wracking at same time.

Either way, I am embracing it all. After all, it’s something I want to do. I know that good or bad, yet another delightful adventure beckons…

Have you gone back to school after a long break? Did you attempt it full-time or part–time?

Do share your experiences!

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

I think it’s rough after a hiatus of any length. I went back after two years, and between working the overnight shift (11 PM-7 AM) and school, I couldn’t handle it. I was in class when I should have been home sleeping, and nodded off during more than one session. I took two classes, and that was it. If you can make it thru, more power to you.

Oh wow…night shift and classes in the day…no way could I do that! Mine would be classes 3 nights a week from 6 to 9 and work 5 days a week from 8:30 to 5. And I go the gym 5 mornings at 6. Thanks John…hopefully I can make it! 🙂

Thanks Archana! For me, ever since I finished my degree, a year or so later I’d been wanting to go back. Initially it was to study more psychology but in the last year or so I realised I’m done studying psychology and am happy with how much I’ve done. Writing is my next adventure…
So yes, go for it! Upgrade your skills, meet new people, learn and love it! 🙂

I always have going to graduate school at the back of my head, but up to now, that dream hasn’t come into fruition. And it doesn’t help that I don’t know what to study about. I did years ago, and I honestly tried to go back to school, but things were not meant to be. I have not lost hope, but if I don’t end up getting a master’s degree, I won’t beat myself about it. I did try. It really was just the wrong time anyway, and looking back, probably not the wise degree to continue my studies with. I won’t tell what it was, though, because i will then have to explain why I did not continue and will just go, nah, excuses, excuses, he he…

Good on you. I would love to go back to learn and study anatomy/ physiology. However uni’s don’t just have listening lectures you can just go on in and listen to stuff. Unfortunetely study comes with assignments and I just couldn’t be bothered…Short day courses and Professional Development Days for me!! Good luck with it all.

Thanks Elisha…yeah I have to do a lot of professional development courses for my psych career and registration. I’ve done a few short courses on writing but felt like I wanted more. And yes, the assignments are definitely the daunting part but we’ll see how things go! 🙂

I went back to uni to study my Masters degree after about 7 out. I worked full time and studied part time and at times it was very full on. Some of my sick days from work may have collided with assignment due dates. Lol… I did most of mine externally with a few residential stints during my school holidays. Good luck! Am sure you will find a way to manage it all!!
