X is for Xenodochial #atozchallenge

Prior to starting this challenge, the letter X had me stumped. I posed the question to the most amazing community of bloggers about this and got a few responses. One such response came from Sulekha with this very word. I had to Google it {having never heard it before!} and would you believe my amazement when I found out it fit perfectly with my theme for the challenge?

Anyway, I will stop with the suspense and reveal the meaning to those who like me, are not aware of it. Xenodochial means “Friendly to strangers“.

If you are new to my blog, you probably are unaware that one of my goals for 2014 was to smile and talk to strangers more. You know, just have a random conversation when I feel like it. And it has been great. I have refrained from just doing the usual monosyllabic responses when people ask me how I am at the shops for instance. And I actually ask questions back and can have an actual conversation {Of course, I do have off days when I’m tired and don’t converse!}

In the very first week of 2014, I walked into Cue to check out their dresses on sale and the girl working asked me how I was going. I told her I was doing great and enquired back and somehow we got chatting about our New Year’s Eve celebrations and she was telling me how hers turned out to be pretty crappy. A few minutes later, she realised she was venting to a total stranger and apologised. But I didn’t mind. She was surprised at having spoken at length to me and voiced it out loud but I believe it was because I was actually listening. In fact, my colleague had assumed this girl was a friend!

The point is, being friendly and talking to strangers is great! It’s something my mum has always done much to the horror of my sister and I when we were growing up. But now I realise it can mean so much to people.

You may just light up someone’s day with a smile. You might just be the person to actually listen to someone’s troubles. You might be the saving grace in someone’s life. Or you might just have the most interesting conversation of your life!

So when was the last time you were xenodochial?Β

Do share!

    I see a lot of elderly people when I go for my daily walk. I’ll often have a conversation with them. For all I know I may be the only person they talk to all day. I must admit I’m the queen of talking to strangers. My kids are used to it and hopefully they’ll do it one day πŸ™‚

    I’m sure I could be more xenodochial than I am, but my husband makes up for it as he is the champ of xenodochialism. In fact, I usually have to walk away grumbling, “Do you have to talk to EVERYONE?????”

    I am relatively reserved but sometimes I visit a health clinic where it takes hours to be seen–sometimes all day! When I am there I become the friendly stranger empathizing with others and swapping stories about wellness and possibly the lack there of. I had the most amazing conversation with an octogenarian Her very moving story became one of my short stories about a slice of life from long, long ago.

    Smiling at the strangers, helping somebody in a store, taking a woman’s hand on the Mall Escalator when she is scared to take the first step… small gestures but mean a lot!

    I used to be much more shy about talking to strangers, but the older I get the less problem I have with doing it, and these days am liable to talk anyone’s ear off!

    I am not a very social person anyway, so can’t say that I am comfortable talking to strangers. Hey, I sometimes find it exhausting to even talk to family members and close friends. But I admire people who can strike up a conversation with almost anyone, my husband is somewhat like that. Though he has his moments of totally being an introvert. Human nature is very interesting, isn’t it? You ought to know, PB πŸ™‚
