The Stress-Mess Correlation

This is a sponsored post for Fort Knox.

In the last 12 months, I have noticed an interesting occurrence in my life. The more stressful and messy my head is {read: my life!}, the messier my apartment. I kid you not. Let me elaborate. While I have never been a neat freak, I have still liked to have things neat and tidy. I remember back to my uni days, I would always have to clean my room before I started an assignment. It’s like I needed a clean space around me in order to have my head organised enough to start the assignment. Or it could have just been an elaborate procrastination strategy but we’ll stick with the former rationale for now!

Nowadays of course, I have more than just a room to clean. I have a whole 2 bedroom unit. And when there is a mess, it isn’t just in the confines of my room. When my life is chaotic and busy and yes, stressful in either a good or bad way, my unit will show signs of it. My room in particular will look like a bomb hit it. My desk will be cluttered with everything from junk mail to cat hair to cat toys to bills to well, just crap. After all, when I am stressed, I have no time to store things or file things away. So the easiest spot is the top of the desk. As evidenced by this photo here:

deskbefore

When eventually the mess and the insanity get too much for me, there is not much to do but to bite the bullet. And clean. And file. And store. And organise. And it is doable. Just look what I did to the desk in the previous picture this Sunday gone by:

deskafter

But the poor desk isn’t the only victim of my crazy life. Oh no. The rest of the unit suffers too. I washed my sheets after more than 2 months {please don’t judge!!} only a couple of weeks ago. Yes, it took meΒ that long! But look what I did when I was busy:

bedbefore

Yeah, I actually slept without sheets for a week. Not a good idea when you have cats. They seem to think the mattress is a new scratching post! But I was way too busy to put on new sheets thanks to doing stuff most nights after work. And yes, blogging counts as ‘doing stuff’. Β But again, once I bit the bullet on Sunday to organise and clean, I did a pretty good job:

bedafter

The kitchen is a common space. Both Housemate and I use it and we take turns doing the dishes. But for some reason {read; she eats a lot!}, we go through dishes so bloody quickly. And they pile up. I hate doing the dishes. One of my least favourite chores. I’ll even clean the bathroom over doing the dishes. But seriously, the kitchen on Sunday looked like a bomb had hit it in the few days before.

kitchenbefore

But when I am on a roll to get my shit organised, I am on a roll. I finally finished with de-cluttering and cleaning my kitchen on Sunday evening. Just before dinner.

kitchenafter

Is my unit looking better since the weekend? You bet! It looks liveable again. Not like a disaster zone. My room looks welcoming again. There is suddenly way more space on my desk. And my bed is oh-so-comfy.

As for my head and life? Well, sadly, while the cleaning did give me a good space in my head for a couple of days, it’s back to square one. Stress. Worries. Burn out. If only it were so easy to de-clutter our heads as it is our houses. Life would be awesome.

I fear one thing though — in another two weeks, the mess is likely to be back.

Because the stress is not going to go away that quickly!

Do you find a similar correlation to the mess in your house with the stress in your life?Β

Do share!

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

Oh yes, now that you mention it, it’s the same with me. I let a lot of mess pile up, getting the laundry done and putting the clothes back in the cupboard is one thing I hate. I don’t have to do the dishes as I load them in the dishwater but my kitchen is always a mess. Your before picture of the kitchen looked pretty neat to me. Where was the mess? πŸ™‚

Definitely! Hubster knows that if I am stressed (read: grumpy!), if he and/or the kids organise a quick tidy up, I am MUCH easier to live with LOL …

I make hubby do the cleaning when I am stressed. πŸ˜› Usually atleast 1 day of my weekends are spent in tidying the house. It is painful doing it week after week but I cannot stay in a messy house.

I’m in exactly the same situation PB, and my apartment has been getting messier! And a few years ago, I would also clean my dorm room before working on stuff, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore! And then when I take a day off from lab, it’s spent cooking and cleaning! Oh well! Growing up is not fun! πŸ™
By the way, your kitchen wasn’t messy at all even in the before picture! πŸ™‚

Coming home from work after a long day to a tidy apartment is so much better than coming home to a mess. Definitely less stressful!

My house is messy usually no matter how stressed or chilled I am! I seem to live in perpetual chaos. But yes, I can relate to being too busy to tidy things properly! I must say it’s reassuring to see other people’s mess. You see so many perfect rooms on blogs these days πŸ™‚

Hehehe the stress-mess connection exists in my life too. But since I’m an OCD freak, I scrub and clean almost every day. In spite of working for twelve hours. I just can’t sleep in a messy place. The mess keeps playing in my head.

I hate doing dishes too. I’d clean bathrooms and sweep the streets of a city if need be. But I would not do the dishes. I wash my plate and cups though, but I hate doing the rest of the dishes!

Your house look spic and span now πŸ™‚

Same here. Cleaning everything and putting it in place is a activity I look forward to πŸ™‚ I don’t mind doing the dishes. Kinda prefer it to all other works like sweeping and cleaning bathrooms.

You DO realise that the Kitchen ‘before’ looks just as neat as the one ‘after’? πŸ˜›

But, I totally agree with you! I need cleanliness around me and I go on these cleaning sprees and then lose steam for a week. Other times, I just watch the laundry pile up and think, ‘It can wait.’ Stress comes from other sources though, so I find other ways to tackle them πŸ˜‰

Amazing what a big difference the decluttering made. Good for you. I think the stress-mess correlation in my house is also related to the level of busy-ness. Busy = stress = mess. All mathematically correlated.
