Theatre Time: Freud’s Last Session

On Thursday night, I watched ‘Freud’s Last Session‘ at Theatre Royal after being provided with 2 tickets for the same. Went along with my friend M who is also a psychologist. Having never been to the Theatre Royal before, I must say I was very impressed by the venue to begin with {And maybe a tad intimidated!} and we got some brilliant seats.

The play is set on the day that Britain enters the 2nd World War and Freud invites C. S. Lewis, then a little-known professor to his place. Lewis is under the impression that he has been invited to be chastised for his depiction of Freud in a recent book. However, Freud has other things on mind and the two debate issues around death, sex, the meaning of life and most of all, the existence of god. While I know the play is fictional in that Freud and Lewis never really met, it was intriguing in so many aspects and made me view Freud in particular with a different mindset. For one thing, I had no idea he was an atheist. I was aware that Lewis was religious given that the Narnia chronicles {which I am yet to read} have several biblical connotations. I also didn’t know that Freud took his own life due to suffering from oral cancer. They don’t teach you that in Psych 101.

All in all, it was a lively and engaging play and one that certainly makes you think and question things. Particularly the existence of god. At no point though, does it give you an answer in black and white terms. Rather, there are several shades of grey. The actors playing Freud and Lewis were brilliant as was the set itself.

I’d highly recommend watching it!

Freud’s Last Session is currently showing at Theatre Royal until the 1st of September. You can book your tickets here. I’ll leave you with a preview of the play.

Until next time,

Cheers!!!
