Healthy Living

Living the healthy life: 12 months on

In July 2012, I made a decision that turned my life around.

After enduring the end of a relationship in the beginning of the year along with a whole lot of stress and health issues, I took charge of things and signed up for the 12WBT program by Michelle Bridges. For me, it was a way to start losing the bit of extra weight I had as well as kickstart a new lifestyle. Plus I hoped it would help me feel better mentally. It was not supposed to be a one-off thing. I have never believed in fad diets and love my food. But I did learn that there were some things I had to change including my portion sizes back then. I also needed to get back into a proper exercise routine given that winter had me in a slump.

When I started the 12WBT program, I weighed 58 kgs on my 153 cm frame. 12 weeks later in November, I was down to 52.5 kgs. My goal had been 48 kgs but the fact that I didn’t reach it didn’t really bother me. Because like I said, it wasn’t all about the numbers. I was happier and kept going. I decided not to sign up for another round as I figured I had learnt enough to do it on my own. By February this year, I had gone down to 47 kgs. On my own. And was feeling fit and fabulous!

Since then, I haven’t updated much on how I have been going with my lifestyle.

So here it is.

I have continued going to the gym regularly. At least 4 times a week if not 5. Additionally, bushwalking has been added to the workouts on weekends and I dabbled in some rock climbing for a while. My eating plans have gone a bit out of whack in that I haven’t been regular with meal plans. I can thank weekend bushwalking for that! But having said that, I notice I am aiming to make healthy choices with my food.Β Prior to winter, I was a bit worried if my gymming would slack off due to the cold weather. But I kicked winter’s arse! Because, even on freezing cold mornings of 4 to 5 degrees, I jumped out of bed and hit the gym. Thank goodness for that because the cold weather has increased my appetite and for some bizarre reason, a craving for sweet stuff!

I am loving the gym in a way that I cannot even begin to describe. It’s not a chore by any means. It’s a part of life and my daily routine. I no longer need any extrinsic motivation. I don’t have the feeling of “ugh it’s morning and I have to hit the gym“. Rather, it’s a “oh yes, morning’s here! Gym time!” and the crappy feeling is only there if I don’t go for some reason. Since December or so I have been focussing more on strength training and toning my muscles. Which are definitely working. I renewed my membership at the gym earlier this month and one of the trainers told me that it was nice to see me doing free weights as not many women are game to do so alone. Something I’ve wondered about before. This month, I decided I needed to also work on endurance and consequently, have upped my cardio routines.

I am also loving how exercising and bushwalking is helping my mental health. I feel good and while I do have the odd slumps, these are wonderful lifts for me. I notice that these are the times I am completely and utterly present. When my feet are thudding on the treadmill, all I am thinking about is the running and the way my body feels. When I lift a 15 kg barbell, I am noticing my biceps grow. When i do crunches, i can feel the squeeze of my abs. When I’m out in the bush, all I focus on is the present — the people I’m with and the beauty of nature.

Finally, I am loving my body and love that I am looking after it. I am very thankful that I can do this and have the means and the opportunity to do so.

I have realised that it takes hard work to get to this place. Living a healthy life does not come easy. Losing weight does not come easy. But if you value your life and your health, then you will be able to put in the work required for it.

Because in the end, health matters. Both physical and mental.

One of the things we were asked to do during 12WBT was keep a before and after photo in our swimmers. For ourselves. And I found it very motivating. Consequently, I did it again a couple of times after the program as well just to be able to visualise the change. And it even managed to amaze me.

I figured I would be brave enough to share it on this space:

fattofit

58 kgs to 46 kgs {which is not anorexic for my height!}

The image hasn’t been photo-shopped {apart from my head being cut off for obvious reasons!}. The bikini I wore in the first three pictures doesn’t fit well at the moment and I had to resort to my other one.

I guess I have Michelle Bridges and her program to thank as it helped me start this whole process. So if you’re thinking of starting a healthy lifestyle, don’t wait. As the 12WBT program would say, “Just fucking do it!”

***Linking up with Jess for IBOT***

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

congratulations on the weight loss and maintaining it! I was doing quite well on the healthy living front earlier in the year but the last few months everything is out the window, sickness and sleep deprivation meant choosing not to attend Zumba classes. Am spurred to take action again!

Congratulations! That is a fantastic achievement. I just did stair runs and had coffee with 2 friends of mine, one of which has lost a massive amount of weight with the help of weight watchers, and we were talking about the changes that need to be made – mental and physical changes – in order to lose weight and keep it off. It is an every day challenge, not a 12 week challenge, not a 6 month challenge. It’s every day, forever. Yes plenty of programs can help you get started, but ultimately it is up to you and your decisions as to how far you go and how long you keep it up. Well done on continuing the journey on your own and reaching your goal weight! -Aroha (for #teamIBOT)
