Out and About

In Concert with Karnivool

Last night I went to see Karnivool in concert at The Big Top in Luna Park. I’m sure some of you out there are going Karnivool who? Because honestly, in the past month, almost every one I’ve told about the {then upcoming} concert has given me a blank look. Only 2 people actually knew what I was talking about.

All I can say is this. If you don’t know them or their music, you’re missing out.

I’ve been replaying pretty much all their albums in the past month in the car and at the gym. Given that this is the Asymmetry tour, it was not surprising that most of the songs last night were from their latest album. They played ‘We are’, ‘Aeons’, ‘A M War’, ‘Float’, ‘The Refusal’ and ‘The Last few’ from Asymmetry. Sound Awake was given a good run too with ‘Simple Boy’, ‘Goliath’, ‘Set fire to the hive’, ‘All I know’, ‘Deadman’ and my absolute favourite ‘New Day‘. They only played one song from Themata {‘Themata’} and none from Persona. I just wished they’d played ‘Umbra’ as well but I guess there’s only so much you can play in a couple of hours. What was also great about them was that they were supposed to finish at 10 pm but they went on for about 20 minutes more. This despite starting at 8;30 on the dot! Loved them for that!

This was the first concert I went to by myself. Yes, thanks to blank looks by every one I mentioned Karnivool to, I figured fuck it. I’m just going. And I’m so glad I did because I had the best time ever! They were bloody brilliant!! Sure I ended up having a late night and only 4 and a half hours of sleep but it was so worth it!

And Ian Kenny. I’m in love with him. I love his voice and his adorably quirky dance moves. He is such a talented guy. For those who don’t know, he is the lead singer of Karnivool as well as Birds of Tokyo. And in 2013, he has also made ARIA charts history by becoming the first singer to have two No. 1 albums with two different bands in the same year. Asymmetry has topped the charts and March Fires {with Birds of Tokyo} also topped the charts earlier in the year {though I must admit I preferred BOT’s earlier stuff to that album!} So fucking talented!

Here are just some of the photos I took. Yes, I know I tend to focus on Kenny the whole time! 😀

And finally, another testament to just how good they were: my neck is still sore from all the head-banging!

By the way, Moshcam filmed yesterday’s concert and will be streaming it shortly.

Thanks Karnivool for the amazing show! Hope to see you again sometime soon.

Until then, I’ll just have to be content head-banging in the car!

Until next time,
