Interviewing potential flatmates

So I haven’t had flatmates for a while. I put off my previous search because the family was coming over. But now, the time is right to have someone help with the bills. Honestly, I would love to just live on my own. Hopefully in two or three years, I am hoping my pay will increase to a point where I can actually afford to live with just the cats as companions!

Anyway, I advertised a few weeks ago for flatmates and have a couple of people coming over to check out the place later this week. One is a girl who sounds all right on the phone and who desperately needs a place. The other is a guy who also sounds quite reasonable. I had put a preference for female flatmates. I have shared with males before and while I can manage it, some of them have been too messy. Having said that, I’ve also shared with a male flatmate who was too neat that he didn’t like me leaving a cup in the sink overnight! [I think my mum would like him] So while I had my preference down as females, I had this guy contact me saying he was interested and that he worked long hours and is quiet and loves cats. So I thought I’d give him a chance [It was the quiet bit that got me. And well, the love for cats!] I half hoped he was gay but turns out he’s not. [Will and Grace fantasies there]

I’ll probably make my decision by this weekend.

In the mean time, it’s back to interviewing. And trying to remember all the things I need to ask them. Somehow though, it’s like a job interview — people tell you what they want you to hear and then later, don’t really show that! Like my previous flatmate M. While I can’t complain too much about her, she slacked off with helping with the cleaning after telling me that she cleaned her previous unit weekly! And here, she slacked off helping once a month! Plus there was the issue of her homophobia. Go figure. And of course, the one before that was entirely my fault. Remember L? Alarm bells should have rung when she introduced herself as a New Christian. Anyone who states their religion in the introductions is not all there by my book.

I guess as long as the current ones can assure me they will pay rent on time, be reasonably quiet but social, not be party animals, not have partners over all the time, not be religious fanatics, I think I’ll be happy. Or am I asking for too much?

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

oh it is tough staying with someone you don’t know. Plus the hygiene standards of each person is different and I have had many specimens as flatmates when I was in college. All the best πŸ™‚

I have been lucky enough to only live with people I’ve known for a while. Even that can be an eye-opening experience, but I’m still glad I never had to go through what you’re doing now… on either side of the equation. Good luck!

Oh gosh it is so hard isnt it? My daughter had so many troubles too. It would be good if someone else could aso be there with you. Someone who knows you well and who could give you their opinion. I think you have to make it clear what your deal breakers are. Just be up front with everything that is important to you. But someone who works long hours is a good pick as they will be away a lot. As long as they dont come home and party all night long though. Good luck with it all. And no, you can never be too fussy. Don’t give in or get too desperate.

I wanted to initially live with a flat mate but my prior bad experience made me realise, I am really not all that good at tolerating people. Yes, go figure! :p

But I hope you find a lovely room mate and no it is not asking for too much!! πŸ˜€
